The Hotel "La Caletta" is in Porto S. Stefano. Its name comes from the bay where it is located. We are about 500 meters far from the centre of the town: you do not have to take your car if you want to go out for a walk.
Coming from the north of Italy, from SS1 Aurelia (E80), turn right at Albinia and then take the SP 36 Giannella for about 8 Km. Then turn right towards Porto S. Stefano (SP 161). Coming from the south of Italy, from the SS1 Aurelia, turn right at orbetello, drive through the Town of Orbetello and take the SP 161 towards Porto S. Stefano.
The main railway is along the Tyrrhenian coast (Genoa.Leghorn-Rome), but you can also catch the train Florence-Grosseto via Siena. In any case, stop at orbetello-Monte Argentario station. There, you can catch a bus to Porto S. Stefano.
Porto Santo Stefano is the chief town of Monte Argentario, a promontory in the southern coast of Tuscany. The centre of the town is the main square, named Piazzale dei Rioni. The name comes from the 4 quarters (rioni) of the town. Every year, on the 15th of August, the so-called Palio marinaro takes place in the bay in front of the main square. It is the most important event of the year: four gozzi (wooden rowing-boats), representing the 4 quarters, compete with each other in a difficult and tiring race over a distance of 4000 meters.
On that occasion, the whole town is a feast of colours and songs: people – sometime tourists too – put on funny and many-coloured clothes and take part in a kind of parade all along the streets.
There are also other interesting places to see in Porto S. Stefano: the Spanish Fortress from the 17th century, the Mediterranean Aquarium and the Promenade designed by Giugiaro, where you can go for a walk after dinner.
The second town of Monte Argentario is Porto Ercole, with its typical narrow streets in the old part of the city, the Fort Stella (dated back from the 17th century) and the Rocca Aldobrandesca (build in medieval times).
The Panoramic road allows you to drive through most of the Promontory, its natural landscapes and beautiful bays, surrounded by picturesque cliffs, that you can reach either on foot, going down through narrow paths, or by sea. The most famous bays are: Cala Grande, cala Piccola, Cala del gesso and Cannelle (this one is in front of Isola Rossa).
The highest point in Monte Argentario is Punta telegrafo, where you can get a magnificent view over Orbetello Lagoon, the long sand dune of Giannella as far as Giglio and Giannutri island.
You can practise a lot of sports during your vacation in Monte Argentario: if you are fond of trekking and mountain bike, you can go for a ride through the paths of the promontory; if you prefer sailing, you can attend the courses organized by the yacht-clubs of Monte Argentario. Besides, there is also the Argentario Golf club with its series of 18 holes.
Our coast is a real paradise for people who love diving and snorkelling: Argentario, Giglio and Giannutri offer memorable marine landscapes and crystal-clear sea waters. If you want, you can hire a wind surf or charter a sailing or motor yacht.
